Cambridge Technical Level 3 Extended Certificate in Digital Media 

Opening the doors to further study, University, apprenticeships and employment in the media industry. The Cambridge Technical course in Digital Media gives learners an understanding of how different media institutions operate to create products that appeal to specific target audiences; learners will gain knowledge and understanding of the production processes and create a media product. Through this, learners will also develop transferable skills such as planning, communication, adaptability and leadership.

Students are able to explore media industries and create coursework in for an eclectic mix of media platforms including: television, radio, advertising, music video, film, social media, magazines and more. This is a more practical based course which allows students to develop skills and build up a portfolio of media work to take into the media industry or for a university course of study. This course is more accessible for students and allows them to explore a range of media platforms. The qualification offers 5 units for students to study – two of these are exam based and gives the qualification equivalent to one A-level.

The Oakes Media department has excellent facilities such as a television studio, radio station, professional photography and sound equipment, a Mac suite and iPads for students to use. Along with great facilities, students will take part in engaging and exciting lessons taught by innovative teachers who have worked in the Media industry. Our teachers thrive on integrating practical work and theory based lessons for our students.

No previous media or technical skills are needed for this course, as you are taught everything you need to know to create media products. The only thing you need is an open mind, hardworking attitude and willingness to learn more.

Future Opportunities:
Studying Media at Oakes College Cambridge allows you to create a portfolio of media work to take into the media industry for work or use to showcase for university.

80% of our students in 2018 went on to a University course and others went to work in media or take on a media apprenticeship.

The department encourages students to take work experiences places in the media industry and has contacts to help students make that first step. We also recommend short courses, workshops and internships which will help develop our students’ skills further.

Media gives students the ability to work in the vast industry of media, however it also creates the pathway towards a career in law, marketing, project management, politics, web design and more.

Entry Requirements:
To study this course students would normally be expected to achieve:

7 Higher Grades including:

  • Grade 4 (or above) for English and Maths
  • Grade 4 (or above) for other GCSE subjects
  • 1 BTEC (or equivalent) at Merit (or above) may be included within the 7 grades

This course is equivalent to one A-level.

Cambridge Technical Level 3 Diploma in Digital Media 720GLH

Course Content:
This is a more practical based course which allows students to develop skills and build up a portfolio of media work to take into the media industry or for a university course of study. This course is more accessible for students and allows them to explore a range of media platforms. The qualification offers 11 units for students to study – three of these are exam based and gives the qualification equivalent to one Alevel. Coursework will include creating a television advert, a radio show, a magazine article, a music video and a short film. In the second year, students choose a specific media concentration, based on their interests, as their final project which could range from magazines to radio, short film to creating an app. Students will receive lots of help and support with choosing their final projects and then lessons tailored to their ideas.

Assessment:
Students will study 11 units over the two year course creating a qualification equivalent to 2 Alevels.

There are three exam units: Social Media and Globalisation, Pre-production skills and Media Products and Audiences.

There are 8 course work units which include – advertising media, radio production, television and short film, the creation of sound in media, create audio-visual promos, plan and deliver a pitch for media, scriptwriting and creating a media product.
