A-Level Geography

Geography is THE subject that helps you to understand the constantly changing world around you. Geography helps you understand how people and societies relate to changes in the natural environment. On this course, you will also learn how to evaluate attitudes to geographical and environmental issues.

We follow the 9GEO Edexcel course – as shown below, it is an exciting and contemporary, issues-based course. This A-level encompasses a range of topics whilst still enabling participants to study the eight units in sufficient depth.

A-level Geography (Exam Board – Edexcel) Both physical and human aspects of Geography are taught:

Paper 1 (worth 30% of the course marks) –

· Tectonic Processes and Hazards

· Coastal Landscapes and Change

· The Water Cycle and Water Insecurity

· The Carbon Cycle and Energy Security (including climate change)

Paper 2 (worth 30% of the course marks) –

· Globalisation

· Diverse Places

· Superpowers

· Health, Human Rights and Intervention

Paper 3 (worth 20% of the course marks) – This is a synoptic decision-making style paper with a resource booklet which will draw together many aspects of the A-level course.

Independent Investigation (worth 20% of the course marks) – In addition students will carry out an independent investigation.

Entry Requirements:

7 Higher Grades:

· Ideally a Grade 5 (or above) for Maths

· Grade 4 (or above) for English

· Grade 4 (or above) for other GCSE subjects

· 1 BTEC (or equivalent) at Merit or above may be included within the 7 grades

Trips

There is a requirement of the course to attend 4 days of fieldtrips. This is compulsory for all students wishing to achieve an A-level Geography grade. Recent destinations have included the Dorset Coast and London. The Summer 2025 trip is to the Peak District and Sheffield.
