BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate

The focus of the Health and Social Care course is to develop a foundation of skills and knowledge which can be used within a variety of care settings. The course covers a wide range of topics. A range of assessment techniques will be used including written examinations, projects, practical work, role plays and coursework assignments.

Students who choose this course will develop transferable skills that can be used in both higher education and other life or work situations and an understanding of a variety of care settings, job roles and the values of health and social care. The Health and Social Care sector offers a wide selection of career choices in a growing job market. Progression includes employment or further specialist training.

Over the duration of the course, you will complete two external examinations and four assignment-based tasks. Of these six tasks, four are mandatory units (decided by the examination board) and two are optional.

The mandatory units are:

F090: Principles of health and social care – 80 GLH

In this unit you will learn about the key topics that are important to develop underpinning knowledge and understanding relevant to health and social care. Assessment – This unit is assessed by an exam

F091: Anatomy and physiology for health and social care – 80 GLH

You will learn about the arrangement of body systems and the structure and function of the component parts. You will learn about key processes within each body system, that enable them to function properly. Assessment – This unit is assessed by an exam

F092: Person-centred approach to care – 50 GLH

In this unit you will learn the principles and values that underpin a person-centred approach to care, to develop care plans for individuals. Exploring how to communicate, how to build relationships and the barriers that need to be overcome to achieve person-centred care. Assessment – This unit is assessed by an assignment.

F093: Supporting people with mental health conditions – 50 GLH

In this unit you will learn about how individuals with mental health conditions can be cared for and supported in a way which is suitable for their needs. Assessment – This unit is assessed by an assignment.

The further optional assignment will be chosen from the following list – You must take two of these units:

F094: Supporting people with long term physiological conditions – 50 GLH

F095: Investigating public health – 50 GLH

F096: Supporting people in relation to sexual health, pregnancy and postnatal health – 50 GLH

F097: Supporting healthy nutrition and lifestyles – 50 GLH

Entry Requirements

To study this course students would normally be expected to achieve:

· 7 Higher Grades including

· Grade 4 (or above) for English and Maths

· Grade 4 (or above) for other GCSE subjects

· 1 BTEC (or equivalent) at Merit or above may be included within the 7 grades
